- ABOUT THE MEDITERRANEAN
- With supervision, the Mediterranean served much like a connector linking Anatolia, Egypt, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, north Africa, and southern Russia (routes from the Black Sea)
- In the third millennium BCE., the Greeks met and socialized with people from other places and societies who traveled along the Mediterranean basin.

- THE SPREAD OF GREEK INFLUENCE
- Greeks organized city-states in order to start society
- By 800 BC, there were several poleis in Greece (Sparta and Athens), or increasing city-states that served as important centers in Greek society.
- As the poleis grew and improved, more colonies were made along the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The economy moved by trade, and after a while they began to have conflicts with them of the Persian Empire.

AS POPULATION GROWS/TIME GOES ON
- During the next century as the population of Greece was increasing, the people used up all of the resources which resulted in almost 400 Greek colonies along the Mediterranean Basin.
- There were also signs of Greek people in small colonies near the Aegean Sea and Anatolia which spread the influence of the Greek people.
- In the 7th century BCE, there were hundreds of colonies along the Black Sea and provided these residents with abundance of natural resources.
- Greek colonization started more communication and exchange than ever before in the Mediterranean area. It also spread new languages and cultural traits. Some wealthy people continued the influence by creating new cities and small areas in places like Sicily.
Above is a picture of a large social area in ancient Greece where many people could gather at one time, unifying the Greeks and giving them a place to expand and celebrate their culture.
