Development of the City State -Jack Tucker
The people that lived in the Balkan region and Greek peninsula used the Mediterranean basin to meet with the different people that used it to travel and trade. Because of the different societies that they met, the Greeks built their own society under the influence of the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, and other societies from that region.

This is a picture of the Greek goddess, Athena. The Greek religion was made through influence of other cultures they were exposed to through trading in their poleis.

The Poleis
The Greeks used a polis (fortified site) as refuge for refugees in time of war. These poleis had a very large populations, and because of that had become very lively places of trade. These places of refuge started to extend their authority over the surrounding area. They levied taxes and sent a portion of the agricultural surplus to help the urban population. Around 800 B.C.E many poleis had become Greek city-states and functioned as the principal centers of the Greek society. Some poleis celebrated their own traditions with little influence from the other cultures. Other poleis were made into small monarchies, and were under the rule of local notables. Many of the poleis were under control of generals or politicians that were known as tyrants. The most important poleis were Sparta and Athens.

This is a pic collage I made to help describe how poleis were like marketplaces and how citizens that lived in this poleis, used them to their advantage.
