Chapter 9 Summary: Polis, or city states, had a very big role in the development of ancient Greece. Population and society all started to flourish and thrive because of these city states and how they contributed to Greece. One of the strongest city states in Peloponnesus was Sparta. Sparta is based off of military strategies and self-discipline. Spartans believed in the simple life, and all citizens were equal and not justified by wealth or social status. Athenian empire has developed in multiple aspects including how the environment has shaped it, the development of infrastructure, social interactions, as well as its economy. The main philosophers were Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle. These three philosophers helped create many theories and ideas of the world and how it should be lived. Greece art is very important to the culture because it portrays their beliefs and religion. As poleis increased they began to move more into the mediterranean basin. As time goes, many colonies have spread further to southern italy and even islands in the Aegean sea. This helped to create more communication throughout the Mediterranean basin. Alexander the great was a huge emperor in greece. He conquered many regions and areas in greece that helped to create an area of trade, and cultural exchange. Hellenistic empire is split up into three regions, the Antigonid Empire, the Ptolemaic empire, and seleucid empire. These empires combined economies and societies from distant regions and made it possible for religion, trade, beliefs, and values to be spread over large areas. This chapter focuses on classical Greece, from 600 B.C.E to 600 C.E. This chapter discusses how Greece developed culturally, economically, politically, and in many other ways within the spectrum of the world at this time. The first objective discusses how the Greek government was set up and how the ruling systems worked. The second and third objectives described two of the largest examples of the Greek government system and how they functioned. The fourth objective discussed Greek philosophy and religion in detail. This objective showed how the ideas of a small number of people shaped Greece as a whole. Objective five discussed how Greece colonized other areas and spread its influence farther from the main peninsula. Objective six described the downfall of Greece and finally, objective seven discussed how Greece survived under the rule of different empires. This chapter as a whole describes not only a powerful empire and how it was run, but also how hard a culture is to eliminate. |
